I am wondering if one needs to rent a specific corn cob blasting machine, or if one may use a typical sand blasting machine but be able to use corn cob media in it.

Or if anyone has any other machines that would accept corn media i would greatly appreciate the knowledge!

Chris,
There are many blast pots you can use to hold media. The abrasive blast pot is a pretty straight forward piece of equipment, and comes in several sizes. For your purposes, you would need a pot with a smaller hopper, and you need to make sure you are getting a blast helmet with a dedicated air line when you rent your blast pot and compressor. A 185 CFM compressor should work fine. You can use various corn cob grit, crushed glass, walnut or other things in the pot, so long as you have the correct nozzle and your media is dry. Watch your weather, you need dry conditions, low humidity.

What you won't be able to use with that type of set up is soda or dry ice which are set up differently.

I'm going to throw a note of extreme caution out there. I don't care if you are working outdoors, you need a helmet and an airline, and anyone in proximity needs a respirator. The dust from any media in the human respiratory system can cause severe problems. Do it right, get the equipment you need to work safely and don't end up with a nasty respiratory infection in the hospital. It can happen.

Off my soapbox.

Beth
