The Log Home Neighborhood

An online log home community for log home enthusiasts.

I have been collecting books, games and movies that I hope will enhance the experience of staying at our log cabin. My goal is for folks to have fun, connect with nature and unwind. Here are some examples:

Games: Deeropoly (the hunter's version of monopoly), a cowhide checker set, backgammon, dominoes, horseshoes, lincoln logs, and several tools for hearth and campfire cooking. I want to get one of those cornhole games that are so popular, too.

Movies: Fried Green Tomatoes, Gone with the Wind, On Golden Pond, Funny Farm, Cheaper by the Dozen 2, A River Runs Through It, Second Hand Lions, RV, Field of Dreams, A Prairie Home Companion, It's a Wonderful Life, Homeward Bound and Last but not least....National Lampoon Vacation Series - (ok I know what you're thinking, but they are very funny!)

Books: Walden, the Foxfire Series, Ted Nugent's Kill It and Grill It Cookbook, a camouflage Bible, Adrianna Trigiani's Big Stone Gap series, and dozens of books about the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Regions(my neck of the woods).

I would love to know what you all consider to be log home/cabin entertainment! What are your favorite movies, books and games for a log home lifestyle?

Thanks!!
Anne

What an Awesome idea, and I would never have thought of all this!! I love to make playlist for everything so I will definitely me CDs, and puzzles and start trolling the thrift shops for them and for nature books. hanks so much for this great thought!!

I have to confess that I'm not much of a board game guy, but the classics always strike me as the best--Scrabble, Monopoly, Life, etc.  Also, for a card game that's accessible and fun for those who aren't into cards, I'd suggest UNO.  And I'd definitely add a checkerboard.

Movies?  There are so many great movies, but I'd urge looking at those that touch on the theme of getting away . . . sometimes with disastrous results:  "What About Bob?," "Cheaper by the Dozen 2," or the outrageously funny "Escanaba in da Moonlight"?  For something a little more meaningful, "A River Runs Through It."  Personally, I'd stay away from slasher movies; you do want your guests to sleep through the night!

As far as books are concerned, there's a huge universe out there.  I'd urge a few wildlife guides, like "The Birds of [Insert Area]" and books that can be digested in the course of a day or two.

We're still in the thinking/planning phase of our cabin project, but one thing that's come to mind is the notion that there will not be a mega-TV in our cabin.  It just seems out of sync with the whole notion of getting away from everything.  Good luck with this . . . it sounds like pure, unadulterated fun to plan for something like this.

Thanks for the suggestions Michael - as a Yooper I'm going to check out "Escanaba in da Moonlight".  I've been collecting UP books (novels, history, and travel) - so this sounds like it fits my theme. D.
My husband and I love to watch the old tv shows on DVD.You can get so many of them on Amazon.Remember Hart to Hart,T.J.hooker,Macgyver,fall guy,Knight rider ,The commish etc. We tend to favor anything from the 80s.We also enjoy playing pool and checkers .

Don't forget outdoor games/activities.  I have begun to collect games when on sale. I found a "hot potato" game that splashes the person when the time is up
