The Log Home Neighborhood

An online (log home) community for log home enthusiasts.

My husband and I built a log home as iur second home last year. Whenever we go up there, there are dead flies all over the floor and sills of the living/dining room. The last time we were there for a few days we bought traps and sticky tape to try to get rid of them. Now he is there and even with the traps, there are about 50 flies buzzing all around. How do we get kill them and stop the infestation?

Hmmmm, I may not have the right answer but, here goes... I have an 'older' log cabin, 1940's version. The only time that I get flies is when something has 'passed away' in the cabin or when I cook sauerkraut...LOL Here are some crazy places to check. Attic for bats/mice/chipmunks. Bats can literally hide and die almost anywhere unnoticed and log cabins have all of those terrific cozy spots that bats like. Check all flues, including clean-outs. Any cracks in your foundation? Your shower traps? Believe it or not, it took me forever to get a suicidal mouse to go down the drain after diving to his death in my shower drain. The only way that I knew he was in there was that I heard a 'splash' and he wasn't in the toilet...LOL Vents on your fireplace? We have a fireplace insert that my husband has to pull out if I suspect a mouse family invasion. Sigh. Have you ever put out D-Con? Mice actually store the stuff for later consumption. Sounds like I have an icky place, eh? But I don't, my cabin is clean. I had a MAJOR house fly invasion when I cooked sauerkraut in my slow cooker last summer. Anyway, I hope that I haven't creeped you out. It's not something that I have to deal with in our full time home. Just our log cabin. :)

I guess I wasn't clear. We have an A-frame style home with really large triangular windows in the front - those windows resemble something out of Amityville Horror (the priest in the room with the flies). They are nowhere except in that area. Always up in those big windows.

EEESH!This happened to us once, also in an older cabin used as a second home. I H-A-T-E flies!! Just like Denise suggested - a field mouse had died in a trap and some time passed before we returned and discovered it. The flies did all gravitate to the windows - none were near the mouse. It was easily remedied when the mouse was removed and the flies swatted. We don't set traps now if we know it will be a while before our return.
It wouldn't hurt to search around like Denise suggested for an uninvited guest that decided to stay.
Good Luck - I'm sure the situation is really putting a damper on your weekend retreat!

We have the solution for everyone with fly problems! www.denythefly.com A friend of ours found these people and recommended them to us. We can't thank them enough. Check out their website - - we have 1/10 the flies after they sealed our home. We have always been inundated with flies. Not anymore!!! We highly recommend them to all log home owners. What they did even made our house warmer - - no more drafts. And they were very professional - - the type of people you enjoy doing business with. The name of the company is "Deny The Fly Log Home Maintenance". Their number is 406-961-0200. They are located in Montana, but I do know that they travel.

I co-own a camper store and I open the doors to make them more accessible for customers. I close the screen door but the little slide door for access to the handle is open. There are no dead things or food in them but we still get flies in them. They are always found around the windows. There must be somewhere that they are getting in your home. Try checking all your windows, doors, screens etc. If you can find just one spot , it may not eliminate them but may cut the numbers down.

Well, my husband went up with his friend this weekend and they ended up bombing the entire place on Friday afternoon (we could never do this before since we have two small children). He said they left the house and came back about 3 hours later and there were about 2000 dead flies inside and outside on our deck, as well as about 1000 ladybugs. He said that the flies were only in the front of the house and there were hardly any on our second floor or any other areas on our main floor. I am guessing that the flies were living in cracks in our logs or something. Hopefully he killed them all and their nests. He said the rest of the weekend was completely bug free. We will be up in about 2 weeks, so we'll see what happens between then and now.

Gross.

Hi Jen,

What product did you buy to do the bombing? Where did you buy it? I was thinking I would try it this weekend.

Thanks in advance.

We get the ladybugs every year and one year we had terrible flies. We use the Wal-Mart fly strips for the windows and the FlyStick's at a couple of the large windows. The guys who built our house didn't seal it all that well so we do get some bugs/critters every year. I need to go back and put some sealant/caulk around windows and doors. That should help to mitigate the problem. We've gotten a couple of bats that were happy to leave when I left the door open for them. Never had any problem with mice though.

good luck with trying to seal it up after the fact, our builder didn't use gasket tape or caulk in between the logs and everything comes inside, even rain, we've tried caulk, probably about 100 tubes nothing seems to work, who did u buy from? we used BATTLE CREEK LOG HOMES out of tennessee
