The Log Home Neighborhood

An online (log home) community for log home enthusiasts.

I have been planning for a year to have a chiseled edge counter installed in our log home kitchen. I got the idea from a picture I saw twice in Log Home Living. Our installer is beginning fabrication on Friday. The counter in the picture has a VERY rough and rustic edge. This is my dilemma: I just read that chiseled edge counters are not user friendly and can snag clothing. Since this edge will be throughout the kitchen and along a bar, I am a little concerned, although I love the look. Does anyone out there have any information they can provide regarding this type of edge? I sure would appreciate any input before Friday morning - no pressure, though:). Thanks! Anne

Hi Anne. You've got great taste. I love the chiseled look. I, too, am looking to replace my countertops (though I'm considering quartz) and expressed that concern to my salesman. His advice to eliminate sharp edges that can cause clothing snags (or worse--minor cuts and scrapes) is to hit it lightly with a polisher at a 400 grit. I can't speak from personal experience since we haven't actually installed the counters yet, but supposedly, this will take the sharpness off without diminishing the chiseled look.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Donna! I am going to make sure I discuss this with my fabricator/installer. I really love the chiseled look and want to make sure I do whatever I can to make it a functioning counter. Its kind of like a cute pair of shoes that hurt you feet. I am so happy that this forum is here to rescue me in these situations. I will keep you posted and thank you, again! Anne

Anne,

Just yesterday my husband was saying how much he loved the chiseled edge counter we had seen at a cabinet maker's showroom. We are in the framing stages of our rustic natural elements look stick cabin (not log) so are making decisions regarding the kitchen. Now that you have your counter in, do you find to to be too sharp or were they able to smooth it properly? I LOVE YOUR COUNTER TOP!

Is it possible to get a ball-park figure for such a look? We are clueless and have seen two websites where one said $10.00 a linear foot and the other $25.00 a linear foot. Our builder wrote and said some places you just pay a one time fee for the set up of the equipment to do it. Are we getting correct information?

I LOVE what you are doing with your cabin! Our bathroom is going to have rock, slate and timbers to it. I am having fun with our little project.

Thanks, Glenn. The information is certainly something to consider. I feel somewhat more comfortable with the fact that this is not our primary residence, but purchasing the testing kit they mention would bring peace of mind. Thanks! Anne

Well, this may not see helpful, but if you love the counter and love to cook, find an apron you adore. My mom was an apron wearer, me not so much, but if I fell in love with a counter that called for it, I'd find an apron I would have fun wearing. :)
