The Log Home Neighborhood

An online log home community for log home enthusiasts.

Well, they are starting to grade the area around the house. We are building our log house in Maine and we wanted to get some ideas for a rustic fire pit (not gas). I sort of picture a big round fire-pit with some Adirondack chairs around it ready for the marshmellows!! It will be on the ground - not a deck. If you have any ideas and/or pictures, it would be great. Any and all ideas are more than welcome.

I did an internet search for fire pit pictures and found quit a few. I plan on making one also. I guess you could just use some rock or bricks for a simple in ground one up to laying patio brick/stone. Some with not too much work would look great. I was hoping to see some that others have made posted here so I could get ideas also. We just had some campfires on our property on the ground so far. You could even incorporate horse shoes, landscaping and gardens, birdbaths into the area with simple grass, gravel, patio stone.
Glenn, Thanks for the reply. Hopefully, people will post some cool looking ones. I am sure there are a few out there in log home heaven!!
A landowners association next to our cabin has developed a "standard" for firepits that we followed: http://home.att.net/~uintalands1/wsb/html/view.cgi-photo.html--Site... will get you to their design.

Check with local well-drilling and some construction outfits, they may have some surplus 1/4-inch steel pipe that may be 2-3 foot long. These make excellent lining for firepits. You may also check with a local gravel crushing operation, their rock crushing "pans" are replaced very often. These will weigh at least a couple of hundred pounds.

A bag or two of concrete in the bottom to keep the fire burning underground, a gravel or concrete buffer around the firepit for spark control, and a mesh (<1/2 inch) lid and you would be set.
Hi Judith,
I did an internet search too like Glenn and I found that i was attracted to the square ones. They were just a little diffrent and for my practical side, they would be easier to build.
I liked this one for example:

You can find the article on how to build it Here.
Earlier I mentioned going to a well driller. Here is another place to fine a center for your firepit: Check with a local rock crusher. They go through gravel cones on a regular basis and will usually give you their old crusher coners. These are not light, may weigh up to 1200 pounds. We have many in our landowners association.
Hi Judith - a rustic, round, wood burning fire pit is on our to-do list, also. We have some left over field stone from our fireplace, I was hoping we could use. Below is a link to an online "ehow" article for how to do it yourself (maybe??) with a picture. If you have pictures of ideas you all have I would love to see them!
Good luck!
Anne

Hi Lee and Judy: Julie and I went to The Parade of Homes in Garden City, Utah last week and we saw a firepit that we just loved. I will attach a picture of it for you to see what you think. Dave
I like it but it might be a bit fancy for our setting. Thanks for sending it. I found this one in a magazine:

The thing I like about this design compared to the circular ones, is that this one looks like it would let more heat out horizontally, where the circular (and square) ones, would seem to have the fire down inside and most of the heat would go up.

We purchased a fire ring from an army surplus store. We also added gravel around to avoid mud and a brush clearing. We also added wood stumps and two wood benches.

Hi Judy and Lee......Not much activity in the neighborhood....I was browsing and saw your post about a rustic fire pit....It's now 3 years later....hope you built one you like and can enjoy for years with your family and friends....My husband built ours and we love it.  I left a picture of it. We've had many campfires and can't imagine our log home without one. Take care!
