Has anyone built an in-law suite to their log home?  Did you put it over the garage?  I need to keep it attached to the main house per zoning laws where I'm building and I am wondering how other people have handled the "separate but together" issue in a home.

Thank you!

Is this new construction or an addition?

We haven't but have considered building an in-law suite.  We have a detached 50'x28' garage, and are considering turning the back half into a suite.  I know this doesn't help you.

For your situation, I'd suggest not going above the garage if possible.  What about the "other side" of the garage, rather than on top?  This has two advantages; one - in-laws will likely be older, and as they age stairs become more of a nuisance, keeping them on the main living level would be beneficial and make it easier to care for them (if any of this is a concern) two - acoustics, putting a 30' wide garage space between your home and the suite would provide a substantial sound barrier.  A lot more than having it down the hallway from your bedrooms, and up and over from your living areas.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for responding.  It is new construction (which hasn't started yet).  I wanted to put it on the first floor, but my in-laws want it above the garage. They are only in their 60s now, but the mobility thing does have me concerned.  I like the idea of having it on the "other side" of the garage and on a first floor.  I think it will be better for them in the long run.  We'll have to see what our log home company designer can come up with!

Thank you again for your response.
