Larry - 

I've seen quotes for the same home vary by several thousands of $$.  Each contractor will approach things differently, which will affect their price.

Your best bet: call some actual contractors and get some qualified quotes.  Call 4 or 5.  Hop on our website and get some names of contractors in your area from our "Find A Contractor" page here: http://www.sashco.com/log/contractor.aspx.  It's hard for anyone to give you a good estimate on here w/ out details on accessibility, type of stain being applied, prep before staining, condition of the existing stain, etc. etc.  There are a lot of variables.  I'm sure many of the contractors would be happy to give you a ball park, but they will probably want to visit your home and/or look at detailed pictures before giving you a set quote.

To provide labor and materials for applying 2 coats of finishes, we are usually at $70 to $100 per 100 square feet of surface, that does not include prep services such as washing, media blasting, or wood preservatives.

We just did ours with Sashco deck and fence stain. We had 3 sections to do for a total of 1800 square feet. It took us 3 days. I think we saved a ton of money. It wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be except for all the spindles we had. That part was not fun. The Sashco stain looks great on our porch and decks. We used the Transformation Medium Brown. I love that the wood shows through so nicely. I highly recommend the Sashco products. It cost us a total of $500 for our staining project.

Thanks for the reply Denny it allows me to elaborate on my $70 to $100 price range.

You say it took us 3 days to do your deck, so I am going to assume 2 people. If it took 3- 8 hour days, that would take up 48 man hours. If you would pay yourself $20 per hr. that would give you a labor cost of $960. If your products were $500, the project value would be $1460. At 1800 square feet, that would come to $.81 per square foot.

Most of my clients make enough money at their work, that they can not justify taking off work to do their decks for $20 per hr. and justify it.

The reason we can be profitable at that .$70 to $1.00 range is, even with equipment and overhead costs is, it takes us much less time than 3 days to do 1800 square feet.

Well I do my home myself, with a  couple helpers, I need helpers for the gables.  I use permachink products.  I have a 1500 sq ft ranch, and it took us a week, to do everything.  Cloroxing, powerwashing, filling in any cracks, and staining, and clear-coat.  House looks great!!!  Now, a few years back, friends of ours, that have near the same home as us, hired it out.  They were charged $3000.00 to have the house done, (prep work, etc...)  That was just labor.  They had to buy the stain, caulk, clorox, materials.  Now in that labor bid, that 3 grand did not include their porch or railing, they did that themselves.  So that may give people some idea.  Just about everyone I know, that has a log home, do the upkeep themselves.  I rather enjoy it, I'm outdoors, I do it at my leisure, and I have a good time.
