We have land in the Mount Jackson area in Virginia and are looking for a builder to bid on our log home. We are getting our package from Appalacian Log Structures.

Janis, Tell me about Applog. Why them?

We looked at several companies and liked what we saw at ALS and met with the team in Harrisonburg, Va. several times over the last 2 years. They are great people and we have looked at a home that was built by them and talked to several owners and everyone loves their product. We are really happy with what we are getting, but need a contractor to bid on building it.

Hey Janis, I can't recommend a specific builder to you, but you can find a fairly good list of builders (and dealers and manufacturers) on the Virginia pages of our Log Home Directory.

This is a list of companies in the log home business, but I am not in a position to recommend a particular company. Hopefully this might give you some contacts - a place to start. Hope this helps.

I would highly recommend Curtis Perry at csperry2006@yahoo.com. Tell him Dale sent you and he will treat you good and build a fabuluous home for you as well.

I agree with Dale. Curtis is a good builder. The homes he has worked on have turned out to be beautiful and well built. Dale how is your project going? Hope all is well with you and yours. Would love to see a picture sometime. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Hi Janis, I am a log home builder that specializes in shell construction or "dry-ins". We travel all over the U.S. and have great references. If you choose to be the "owner-builder" you can save a lot of money. In that case you can hire a concrete contractor to put in the foundation, then hire me to do the dry-in, which is erecting the whole house to include exterior doors and windows. That gets you weather proof. then you hire the electrical, hvac, plumbing, and trim contractors to finish the job, saving you tens of thousands of dollars. I would also recommend checking with Curtis Perry as well. We have worked with Curtis for the past few years and he has always done a great job. Good luck!

Hi Janis,
I am a log home finishing contractor. Don't build, nor claim to. I also HATE to give out recommendations. However, I have worked behind several builders and there's a age old joke "little caulk, little paint, makes a carpenter what he ain't".Sometimes, thats more than a joke.
I would highly recommend Tom Gidley out of Boone, NC.
He runs a small company and they take extra time when needed to make certain things are done right. They take a lot of pride in their cabins and it shows.
Whoever you choose, I would recommend going to look at some of the work. Don't let the "WOW" factor sway you. check for things like flashing around windows and doors, etc...
I can not guarantee Tom will travel that far, but it would be well worth the call to find out. His number is 828-963-6031. When I build another, he will be the guy that builds it. Feel free to contact me if you have questions about things as you progress, and most importantly, enjoy the whole process. Even the irritating parts of this is a exciting undertaking and something you will remember and be proud of for years.
