we are in process of starting our first and last new log home, finally................love the metal roofs, has anyone used the galvanized roofs for their home? I am courious about the rusting ,is this a finish or does one do a treatment with chemicals? I have seen in magazines the rust corrigated metal roofs, just from other random homes? We will have 3 wrap porches ,I was playing with the idea how this would look with hand hewed logs, and brick red windows from Pella. Any input will be interesting to hear, thanks and keep logging on!!!

Hi, Glenda

I have been considering the rusted aged metal roof for our hybrid cabin, I had a sample sent from a co. called Bridger steel, we soaked it in water for about 3 days and it got a nice rusty look on one side it appears that you can wipe the rust off by hand down to the regular bare metal , just a film of rust, I was concerned about its rusting vs. integrity, the co. said it has a 40-70 warranty, again this metal roof was made to rust off a.s.a.p. reliying on natural rain fall, it really does give it an aged look, we are considering doing a two materials roof, like a dirft wood asphalt architecual on the main roof and aged rusty on the wrap around porch and screened porch, I think the two materials helps it look even more aged look. good luck, try bridgersteel.com lots of pics and will send a free sample

Try reclametal.com also corten. These roofs rust quickly with first rains and stay that color.

For us it's all about building with the appearance of age, we want our place to look like its been there for a hundred years.

We were considering a colored metal roof for our home but chose asphalt shingles for a number of reasons, cost being one of them. I am pleased with the look of them as well. I know that they will not have the longevity of a metal roof but we will consider using metal when it comes time to replace them.

Alan D. - Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon and it is the reaction of moist air and iron that causes oxidation or rust. Copper is a pure metal and the reaction between the copper and air creates a patina or verdigris that is a protective layer against further corrosion. I wish our budget allowed for a copper roof !! I guess I will have to settle for my collection of antique copper pot and pans.

thanks for all the input, will investigate options, I AGREE,the look of rustic, time worn is like having a piece of history in a home. What could be better! The orginal metal roofs only had color if someone painted them , I remember as a child seeing this in a rural Tenn, area where my mother was from. Love copper, but at this time there is a problem, budget, budget, budget.I am determined to built a nice home that will be my final home, but I want to be able to pay for it. We will just have to see what happens..
