The Log Home Neighborhood

An online (log home) community for log home enthusiasts.

Hello All,
Newbe poster to this site but have been lurking for a while. Wife and I are building in North West Ga. as we speak and are close to sealing the inside on the cabin. I have been speaking with bunches of peoples and am getting a consensus of what to use on the inside. I was leaning to a shellac/ sanding sealer--very light amber--. Our contractor recommended using a poly with a squirt of white latex to keep the logs light in color. The logs have alot of charactureand we did not want to go too yellow/orange.
So what do ya'll think?

Whatever you use, make sure it has some elasticity to it so the finish won't crack with log movement. This will also make it easier to clean your logs over time. And a bit of pigment isn't a bad idea, especially on those walls where the sun will hit quite a bit. Unless you have those special, expensive UV filtering windows, UV light will make its way through & yellow the wood over time. A pigment of some kind will help deter this & prevent the "picture frame" effect.

Hope that helps! I'm sure others will have comments on the specific products they used.

Thanks! And good luck!

Geoff, if you'll send me your address (send an email to merry@permachink.com) I can send you some free samples of interior colors that will provide good UV protection, yet still maintain a lighter interior color. You need to put some type of breathable, elastomeric finish on the inside to help make the logs easier to clean and dust as well as prevent darkening/yellowing of the wood and odor absorbtion.

Good luck with this next difficult decision.

Merry Anne, We are using the Perma Chink products on the outside and from the samples I have seen the interior products were not for us. I think the exterior products will serve us well though. I have spoken to and met with Ken--Perma Chink-- . We are building a Satterwhite Cabin and think the logs would look great and we don't hide the characture.

Thanks all

Geoff

Did you get samples of our clear products or only the tinted ones? OR....is it the texture of the top coats you don't like? (I'm just curious)

Thank you for choosing Perma Chink for the Exterior.

I used Velvit Oil 1/4 honey oak, 3/4 natural blend manufactured in Appleton, WI. It is an oil based product that blends well w/o blotching on full pine logs. After 2 to 3 weeks of drying I top coated with MaxTech Polyurathane water based satin. Send me your e-mail address and I will send you my 'How to do' with the prices and locations of the products I used. I am not in the log home Industry, only a log home owner who tried, as you are doing, to make informed choices on interior and exterior products that work well for my climate and type wood.
