I was thinking about building a dining table using cypress for the table top.  Was thinking about a piece of cypress 2-3" thick and 4-4.5 ' in diameter.  How much am I talking about with that?

I can't help you with cost. Just a word of caution. Cypress is soft. It's nothing like an oak or maple. You will get the "used" look quick using a soft wood for a table surface. Just my 2 cents worth.

Hi

Doug here from www.cedar-stuff.com

Your top would be any more than $6.00 per bd ft for a rough slabs that you can glue together, Theres a few good outlets on the web just do a search for cypress slabs,

If you decide you want a walnut or redwood look us up,

And yes i agree with the previous post about cypress being soft, We use to build everything out of cedar but being also a very soft wood, we now use a lot of walnuts and maple, for table tops, but i do love the cedar.

Check out the pictures i have posted here for a few nice samples.

Have a great day

Doug

thanks
Thanks for the input folks.  What I'm hoping to achieve with the table is a distressed look to complement the distressed look of the floors.  Is one type of wood better than others in order to achieve that goal?
cedar is easy to work as a wood, you can age it by letting the sun beat on it for away, But i have also use a grinder to chew it up then use a vinegar and metal solution to gray it out then sand the high spots down to achieve a weathered, your hard wood stumps will take years to dry where cedar can be used more quickly, cedar is easiser for one guy to move around, a oka stupm will way hundreds of pounds, has a lot more grain to play with
