Hello all, I just found out about this site, very exciting. I am a former architecture student who is looking to get back into the design/drawing aspect and am very interested in the log home industry, looking for tips as to good schools/programs to get into to achieve this.

How different is it to decorate a log home than a conventional home? Does it always have to be in the rustic motif? What if I have the inside finished with drywall instead of logs? Does this make sense?

Hi Donna - thanks. We just closed escrow on our Lake Superior property. I am reading all the magazines - looking at all the plans - devouring the pictures - and drawing, and re-drawing and re-drawing. Once the house is done - I am leaning towards a comfortable woodsy type decor - however - the post-modern part of me keeps asking why couldn't I do mid-century decorating in a log cabin also? So . . . I am still torn.

Hi Dee! Welcome to the group. What are you thinking for your log home? I'd love to hear what you have planned.

Hi - new to the forums and new to log cabins - I would love to join this group as I am planning my handcrafted log home - and would love to glean your ideas, share some of mine, and get some feedback. Thanks so much - Dee

Hi Trixie - Rita and Joe are right on the money. In addition to being a stunning addition to a log home, bamboo is typically considered a "green" material because certain varieties (the kind that typically go into flooring, furniture and other products) can grow a foot or more a day, making them highly renewable. However, the distance they have to travel and the methods that are used to get those materials to you often are significantly less environmentally sound. As a matter of fact, if a homeowner is looking into LEED certification or another "green home" designation, additional points are granted for buying locally to reduce pollution and fossil fuel consumption.

The best thing to do is ask the merchant where the material you're interested in comes from and how it's shipped. If you're trying to do something good for your home and the Earth, the small amount of research you'll need to do will be well worth the investment.

I am really confused at how it can be more "green" to use bamboo from East Asia than use a local material that does not have to be transported half way across the world. Not to mention the working conditions of the people harvesting and producing that bamboo.
Also, the Forest Stewardship Council is having real problems with overseas companies using their logo when the item is not from sustainable forests. You could buy something with the logo and it is fake.

Besides log home living magazine as a great resource, I had come across the Green Log Awards site and was interested to find all the vendors that were nominated and provide green friendly products.

Sometimes in your travels, you can find great deals on old farm tools which can make a wonderful decorating touch. Also any old toys (wood - like old sleds, skis, etc) old cooking items, old washtub, old ceramic items....the sky it the limit, the trick is that it is lovingly worn and from a certain era. Never bypass an old country road flea market....and ebay may be your friend too.
