Help! Log home built in 1984 needs new floors. Wood inside is dark, cabinets are darker! Ceiling is knotty pine but not vaulted so I am afraid of more wood on the floor. Thinking high end vinyl with look of stone or tile in light color. Any suggestions?

The joy of designing your own dream log home is to be able incorporate into the decor what makes you happy. I personally like a little color inside. I change my mind a bit and having a couple of walls in which to change color or theme works perfectly for me. Of course, these are interior framed walls and not the exterior log walls. I have all wood in the main areas with a bit of a mix in the bedrooms and baths.

Richard, I must say I agree with you. Another plus of the wood walls is that you can hang anything anywhere - don't have to find the stud!!!

ill never understand why people build a log home and it looks so beautiful on the outside and you look inside and they put drywall in it ugghhhh!!!! my opinion.

Marcia:
Log homes are adaptive to many themes of decor. It really depends on your personal flavor. I don't know all of the correct terms.....Whether rustic, country, lodgy, western, eastern, beachy, craftmans, missionary or minimalist...Log homes are a perfect match. I will try to post a few photos of what some of my clients have created.

Hello all, I just found out about this site, very exciting. I am a former architecture student who is looking to get back into the design/drawing aspect and am very interested in the log home industry, looking for tips as to good schools/programs to get into to achieve this.

How different is it to decorate a log home than a conventional home? Does it always have to be in the rustic motif? What if I have the inside finished with drywall instead of logs? Does this make sense?

Hi Donna - thanks. We just closed escrow on our Lake Superior property. I am reading all the magazines - looking at all the plans - devouring the pictures - and drawing, and re-drawing and re-drawing. Once the house is done - I am leaning towards a comfortable woodsy type decor - however - the post-modern part of me keeps asking why couldn't I do mid-century decorating in a log cabin also? So . . . I am still torn.

Hi Dee! Welcome to the group. What are you thinking for your log home? I'd love to hear what you have planned.
