Our 2008 Thanksgiving gift was the completion of our vacation log home. It is a custom designed home of 6" x12" hand hewn white pine. The cabin is located on a 4 acre pond in the middle of 30 secluded acres in the beautiful rolling hills of Charlotte County, VA.

Winter Weather, Wires and Wine

I have been waiting and waiting for the snowstorm that hit central Virginia last weekend. I know that you Michigan folks think I'm nuts, but we just don't see that much snow here and I think a log cabin needs one good snow a year. Unfortunately, I was at our primary residence… Continue

DEADLINES!!

Well we've put a deadline on completion of our cabin. We want to move furniture in on Labor Day. And since the deadline was developed, every day feels like a "labor day". I'm sure all of you who have gone before me can attest to the rigors of wrapping up construction. We will visit our cabin every weekend (and have for the last two weeks) to finish the chinking, clean, finish the painting, clean, install various fixtures and hardware, clean, finalize arrangements with pest control, security, pho… Continue

Nice hearing again from you Anne. Unlike you, we're still pretty much where we left off last time. Things are getting better here in Sarasota, FL but still not good enough. So we sit here and wait.

I see that you have been trying to make contact with other members who you haven't contacted for some time. Nice of you to do so.

Please keep us in the loop regarding any new stuff you may be doing. It helps the rest of us to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you Anne. I really enjoyed looking at the pictures of your log home too. Your stone shower and the natural edge granite countertop in your kitchen are both so unique and beautiful!

Hi Anne,

Boy, looking at the pictures of your house sure seems familiar :) Is yours an Allegheny A? Do you have a business in Norfolk?

Hi Anne, CJ from Va. We are at the property every weekend. This was clean up Iweekend and meeting two stone masons. Boy, trying to get work done on "our" schedule is like near impossible. Contractors that needed work months ago when we were ready - are too busy now and the price to lay stone for our fireplace, well, they don't mind asking for an arm or leg. Ha Ha. Crazy. It's coming along. Just alot of decisions that will affect the look of the cabin, I don't want to make mistakes on. I was looking at the steps put in to go upstairs and wondering - looks like to me they didn't leave enough room to fit the Tongue & Groove in behind it ????? Just Crazy. Thanks for listening. I know you know how it feels trying to put a home together such as a cabin and living this far away.

Anne, this is CJ from Va. Haven't written to you in a while now. We have started building in Amherst the last weekend in May. It has done nothing but rain, rain and more rain. I'm looking at my logs every weekend, as we leave our home on Saturday morning and spend untl Monday there. I know we have to power wash before staining, the first few bottom logs on the inside of the cabin where the rain has beat in before the roof was put on are absolutely dirty beyond my belief. I hear Charlotte County is not that far from where we are. Take care. Any advice to make me feel better ?
