My wife, Donna and I have lived in various cities across North Carolina, moving to Charlotte from upstate New York in 1979. Since we were not used to the summer heat, we often escaped to the mountains, staying in various bed and breakfasts from Blowing Rock to Dillsboro – always favoring and returning to Asheville.
In 2004 we decided to build our dream log home just outside of Asheville. We wanted to live in a quiet, peaceful setting, creating a similar lifestyle to the one we enjoyed in the past. Amazingly we discovered that Asheville, and really all of Western North Carolina could provide us with access to beautiful hiking and biking trails, fishing, and many local arts activities.
Donna and I decided to take on the building of our home by ourselves. Since we had supervised the construction of seven others in the past, we knew we could manage contracting out the trades. All we had to do was organize the raising of the logs. After talking with Rick Kinsman at 1867 Confederation Log and Timber Frame we had everything in place and we set a date to raise our logs. This was the beginning of our new home adventure in the mountains.
