Just a few things to look for when examining a potential log home purchase with chinking.  Thermal imaging revealed a poor chinking job showing 20+ degree temperature differences on just one corner of the log home.  Upon closer inspection, the wrong backer rod 'open cell' was used 20 years ago on this log home.  The open cell backer rod, especially on the exterior is now just a crumbly mess after being exposed to moisture for 2 decades.  The owner has been struggling through 3 different…See More

Jim, some people need to do themselves (and us industry folks) a favor and buy existing. Building something new and special takes guts, resources, patience, vision and trust. These virtues don't come easy. Why this thread has even been allowed to continue, must be asked of the site moderator (there obviously isn't one). All this prospect (with no land, but a load of experience) has done has riled a majority. "Some people, you just can reach". It's not worth the aggravation.

He has a point about forecasts and scheduling so nobody has a blank check. But the adversarial attitude comes thru loud and clear, and why would anyone want to do business with such a gem?
So let's hope there are legit prospects with respectable dialogue that can benefit from this site. Otherwise, life's too short to deal with _________.

Hello Folks, You may have noticed that I let myself respond to Chuck's discussion on contracting and the things he required of his Builder. This Gentleman represents a situation that can teach you every thing not to do when it comes to contracting. I have been in this business for over 30 years and in this case it is all about the price and it may be difficult to get paid. I caution anyone considering this project to think long and hard about it. When it happened to me my wife cautioned me that this client would be a problem and I ignored her to my peril. The whole time we were building the home he kept in touch with his lawyer and it became a financial nightmare. Rely on your gut and pass up a situation you wish you had. Good Luck out there and do good work. Jim
