Howdy Dan, my DH and I have a cabin about 10 miles so. of Houghton Lake. we don't 'ride' but love to socialize. My DH is one of the owner's of a private ambulance service downstate, the 2 of you would have a lot in common. Do you like to fish?

You are close to us! I'll be over to have coffee - ha,ha!! Like you & your wife, we are "weekend warriors" at our log cabin for now. We still have quite a few years till retirement but our dream is to ultimately live in Northern Michigan. I think winter is easier in Northern Michigan if you keep busy at activities. We ski, snow shoe, find festivals, go to the parks, etc and winter becomes fun. Have you checked our that Traverse Magazine site "My North" yet? They have activities listed by interest, city, and month. So maybe you can help your Texan wife find some fun this winter!
(On Nov. 15th in Grayling - they are having a christmas parade / festival.)

Congrats on the good fortune! You guys are living proof that counters the conventional wisdom of "no one ever wins those things."

Pictures coming soon??
