"When I built my cabin, I used white cedar which has a high degree of taper.  I just alternated butt to taper.  I did a steeple notch corner, but I am not sure it would work or look well with butt and pass, because of the size difference ."

How to deal with tapered log

HelloI will be using 30 foot southern yellow pine logs. They will be around 12” at the butt and minimum 8.5” at the tip. Im not sure if i will be using butt and pass or saddle notching. How would you go about compensating for the taper?Im thinking either alternating butt/tip or trimming entire log to 8.5” (which would create a huge amount of waste).Any suggestions? Thanks.See More
