I know that lofts are wonderful, but many of us are going to build homes for retirement - which means (for us) NO stairs! We still want soaring ceilings and a large, rustic great room, and the…Continue

"Caribou is one of my all time favorite plans....great layout, beautiful design......but I don't have that financial means. Their Telluride is also a great design; around 1,600 sq. ft. (smaller but has two masters)."

"My waife and I are also in the retirement home planning mode, but we are considering a loft as an office and (with fold out sofa bed) a temporary guest bedroom. I guess I hoping that someone will post what they have built, and we'll say,…"

"You are right on the canned plans that you see. Most companies show the larger homes with lofts because that has been where most of the business has been for years. Now with costs the way they are more and more ranch style homes are being built. I…"

"Hi Laura, We haven't even gotten started on planning the outside. Porches and garages can go just about anywhere. Find the right interior layout first. We want wrap-arounds, also. At least three sides. Most likely a one or two car attached so…"

"Dennis, Sounds like you and I want the same house! The only thing I'd add to your description is a wrap-around porch. I'll check out the site - thanks! Laura"

"Us too (retirement). We have our own particular design, narrow and longer (barn lodge style open floorplan). We want great room truss work, but above the kitchen we are going to put a second floor area mostly for storage (can never have too much…"

"Sigh. A screened porch would be so nice - but impossible in Midland, Texas. The wind and blowing sand would turn it into a sandbox in no time, and my grandkids are too old for that! :) I'll check out the sites, Shanny - thanks!"

"Laura, I forgot to mention, we are looking at single level floor plans for the same reason. When you are younger you don't think about stairs so much. When you get older they can become an issue. So is cleaning. Materials that are easy to keep…"

I too am interested in building a single story log (or frame) home. My reasons are purely financial. I had the perfect log home plan with the perfect loft and upstairs bedroom and bath but when I sent it out for bids the numbers came in so high that I had to abandon that idea. I have now redesigned the house to be a single story home and smaller by about 300 sq. ft. It too has now gone out for bids so it's too early to tell if my plan is going to save me enough money for me to actually build it. We'll see if building up is cheaper than building out. I'm hoping that that is just a myth.
