I have to agree with Tim. Bathrooms that are vented through walls are against plumbing codes in our area. I suggest you check your local plumbing codes before you consider doing this.

Perma-Chink has a product called Wood ReNew that is supposed to restore wood to its original color. It is supposed to work very well. Try getting in touch with one of the reps to get a sample.

Our log home company told us that we would have to attach the shower wall to a framed wall next to the log wall ( the same way you would attach cabinets to a log wall) to accommodate stettling. We chose to re-configure our bathroom so that we would…

You might live in a log home if.... You open the window and hear frogs croaking in the pond instead of sirens. You don't have blinds or curtains on any of the windows. You don't have a doorbell and the door is never locked.... and the coffee is alw…

Our handcrafted home is built with 12 inch logs (average) and we used 8 inch ICF for our basement. We used 3/8" and 1/2" reinforcement every 16 inches. This was approved by an engineer. We have a walk out basement with a stepped foundation.

6 days and counting...

Our beautiful new home will be arriving in just 6 days. I know it is just the shell and there is still so much to do before it will truly be our home but I can hardly wait. It is also so frustrating - I had surgery on my foot a week ago and will be unable to participate in the actual set-up. I am hoping to get around on our ATV and take pictures with the digital camera. I have also decided that hot fresh baking for coffee breaks and hot lunches will be in order as the temperature has taken a dip… Continue

Timely find

As I was going through my recipe file this morning I found a newspaper clipping that I thought I would share. It could apply to building as well as renovating and your relationship with your contractor as well as your spouse.

Maintenance required on Relationships.

To avoid quarrels while renovating, therapists advise the following:

1. Assign and outline duties so you don't fight about who is supposed to do what.
2. Be realistic about the time and money involved. One rule of thumb: predict how… Continue

Waiting....

The fellow who is taking care of the foundation forgot to reserve a tamper so now we have to wait until Friday to tamp and backfill. A small thing I know but the pressure is on to get the subfloor and deck finished as our home is scheduled to arrive in 30 days.

August 22, 2008 - Well its Friday and we have had a little better than an inch and a quarter of rain since I wrote this. Needless to say there is standing water where it has to be backfilled and we can hardly walk because the exposed cla… Continue

Hi, Marla
I have considered soapstone before, does it all look the same, blackish ? I like your photo's, I also love to fish, looks like your hubby has a whole ocean at his feet, we only have a small lake, do you have any finished pic's of your place from the outside, or are you still working on it ? I noticed you have a wraparound porch, we are doing same, ask your hubby if I can comeup and go fishing !

What a day it has been today ! The foundation was poured today and it was a scorcher, 32 degrees Celsius. I made sure everyone had plenty to drink and the girls took Angel, the dog, down to the creek for a swim and a drink too. Our home is starting to seem more real as we progress from doodles on paper to blueprints to watching the excavator digging the hole for the foundation and now the walkout basement has been poured.
