Limitations of using white cedar are of course the size and the degree of taper etc...but I really like…"

- Tell us about yourself:
- Real close friends of ours build a log home 3 years ago and we fell in love with it. We are within 4 years of retirement (hopefully) and are planning to purchase some property and build a log home. We are always looking a magazines and floor plans. We have some figures and are working to meet the costs. Since we've joined the Loghomeu.com network we have since "almost" purchased some property in Jay, Vt. We are dealing with septic issues at this time but it looks good. First we plan to build a detached garage with a room over the top and live there while we build our perfect log home. The lot has a brook flowing and has potential for a small pond.
- Are you lucky enough to be living in a log home?
- Not at this time.
Update
We have decided not to with a log sided garage but rather a board and batten siding, then we don't have to worry about a match other than the stain. We close on the property in Jay, Vt on Nov. 17, it's my wife's birthday. A great gift don't you think?
Update: 02/27/09
Property has been purchased, road is in, site is cleared, well has been drilled. Next step this spring, run power, do septic. Then save $$ for the garage. We have a brook on the property and will be spending some weekends this summer clearing around it, cutting firewood. It's been fun so far.

We are on our way for out first step, our garage. We have what we think is a good price now all we have to do is save for a spring time build. We have 4 quotes from different log home suppliers that range from $80,000 - $120,000, now we have to take a close look at what their "complete" kit includes. We are having our garage builder take a look at our plans for the log home as he has build two log homes that were not from kits. NEKVT said… We had a lot of mis cut and mistake logs, It made the process very hard and slow. We nearly lost our home due to construction loan extensions timing out. I would seriously consider other vendors. If you feel adventurous and have a beam saw ...go for it. Otherwise I would look elsewhere. Good luck and god bless.

- Well, in vermont we are not allowed to have a Presby system "in-ground" yet (Other states allow this). So maby some day it will allow you to not have a mound. However another vermont law states All systems with percolation rates of 61-120 minutes per inch must be designed as mounds. so it will still depend upon your perc rate unless they change that law or you have a higher perc rate than that.

- Hi Thomas, Sounds like you are doing just like us , a little at a time out of pocket. Smart that way. I am about half done clearing my lot and the driveway is coming along nicely. I have my septic all designed and I just became a certified Installer of Presby Enviro-Septic syatems in the state of vermont. If you end up putting one in and need an installer let me know.

Shelley Martinez said… - Thomas - we did the same thing you did in planning your log home - got our hands on every log home magazine and book that we could. I cut out articles and photos that I liked and put them into a binder for our future dream - it was the best reference book we could've made for ourselves. I still refer back to it. (We are probably 15+ years away from retirement - I'm envious you're only 4 years away!
