Great moments at the cabin

Having a great summer so far at our log home. It's been 3 years, the projects don't end but the wondrous moments continue including seeing a fox for the 1st time and having my Loons return to our lake. I've shared some photos below. What is happening at your log home?…

Thanks!

While I'm online here, I just want to send up a big Thank you to Charis at Sascho. We primarily use Sansin products which we love, but were called to do caulking on a house recently stained by another company using Sikkens. We had trouble locating a caulk that would be compatible with the Sikkens stain during the timeline the homeowner wanted the caulking completed. Charis investigated and gave us specifics on when & how we could use Sascho's Conceal Textured Caulk. Following her guidelines… Continue

we have begun! part 2

After reading our post the other day, I thought maybe I should add a few things. From other posts that I've read, we're doing things a little differently than most. First, we are our own general contractor. My husband is the one who has done all of the planning for our home. We have designed it ourselves and will be building it by ourselves for the most part. We are not using a log home package either. Once again, Hubby has done a lot of leg work and we're buying all of the supplies from… Continue

Another week, another log. Well, a couple logs to be exact!

Well, we're still making progress. While things slowed down from the first couple days, they are still moving right along. Take a look at our newest pics and you can see the progress.

We got through last week, although everything seemed to be a blur with all that was going on with our lives. As you can see, all the…

we have begun!

We have finally started. Our excavators started on Thursday and we're amazed at the difference each day. They're working on the driveway right now and because of the length it will take them a little while but it looks great. Everything, that up until now we, have just had to picture in our heads is finally taking shape. Starting to imagine landscaping in the circle of the drive makes it seem more real. The basement walls and the logs are both ordered and scheduled to arrive next month!

Wow

Geez, I take an extended hiatus from the Neighborhood, and it explodes. Last I looked there were about 570 members. Now there's over 2,000! Wow!

Great work on building the Neighborhood out guys. Hope to be around more.

Main Floor

Looking around the photos and I have to say that they are perfect. The most interesting thing that caught in my mind was the main floor. Being the most important, one will know that the main floor is where people are going to be coming the most. One of the things that came into my mind is the flooring. When looking at the bathroom, it's interesting to see some people prefer tiles in bathrooms instead of wooden floors. Also for the washer and dryer, it would be nice to have a simple laundry room… Continue

The Empire strikes back

I was working on the property, pulling kudzu and cutting bamboo, when I
noticed a disturbing thing: the bamboo had made its way back under the
house and was again coming up through a hole in the floor.

Big Beautiful Log Homes...vs...Small Beautiful Log Homes

I can't help but notice that most pictures of logs homes that I have come across are those of the very large, very beautifal homes. Our home is not large, but, very cozy and warm. I don't see many homes of that size in the magazines. Maybe I am just not looking in the right places.

Tearing it up

There has been a flurry of activity lately. Mr. Seals has been at work with his crowbar and sledge, ripping down interior walls and trying to figure out how the cabin was put together -- which is important, since he doesn't want to risk removing something that is structurally significant and end up with equivalent of a giant pile of pickup sticks.…

Log Stacking - Happy Days, Yet a Difficult Week.

Hi Everyone,

Well the logs finally arrived on site this week. On day one, they got everything laid out and the first course down. That was Tuesday. It rained all day on Wednesday, so needless to say, there was no action, unless you were a duck!

Day two was picture perfect. Bright and sunny and lots of fluffy clouds. The crew was doubled up today, and they made much progress. By the end of the day, they had 8 courses of logs stacked. It's really starting to look like something.…

Spring 2010 Road and foundation

Well at the last minute we decided to change the entire direction the house is facing. we will have an even nicer view from the Great room, and the patio will be in the front now, with a screened in porch in the back of the home. I finally have the road all gravel and the power and phone all the way to the lot. The lot is prepped and the footers are poured. I am hoping to strip the foundation wall forms this weekend and begin the drainage. Hopefully this will go fast and we can finally start… Continue

What to do while staring at the logs

After 10 years of planning and one intense year (2006) of building I wanted to share my love of logs in a new way. I had begun writing children's books in 2002 and did a major rewrite to have the action take place at Big Pine Lodge. I wish I had thought of that before our place (the real Big Pine Lodge) was in a couple of issues of Log Home Living (August, 2009 and the 2010 Annual Buyers Guide). . . I missed out on free publicity. Maybe my website and/or my books (for ages 8-12) will inspire…
