Wood Species and Characteristics for Luxury Log Homes
At Avalon Log Homes, we offer several different styles of logs, including milled handcrafted and half-log siding. We most typically use standing dead timber that has been harvested high in the Rockies. This means that our logs have already been dried by Mother Nature. We predominantly use Douglas fir, Engelman spruce and lodge pole pine. Our logs are approximately 14 – 16%… Continue

After notification from the Branim's that they were closing the Barna plant due to decreased sales and some financial difficulties, I spearheaded a group of long time distributors and employess to pool our funds and our talents to purchase the plant, offices, machinery and naming rights from the bank at foreclosure.
We completed that task at the end of June and we have hired 50+ employees. We are running at about 50% capacity right now but our fall looks strong. Jim Barna Log and… Continue

We had our hopes on buying a log home (after many years of wanting one) but the girl we were going to buy the house from went on her honeymoon and said she would sign the papers when she returned. We went through the negotiating with her but when it came time to sign the papers, she just initialized them instead of signing them so it wasn't a deal. All week she kept telling the RE Agent that she would sign and fax the papers right up to the day she was getting married. Well, she didn't sign the… Continue

Any recommendations on the best composite deck cleaner. My log home is approx. 2 years old and I have 1200 feet of composite decking with signs of mold. Looking for the easiest most effective means in which to clean the deck keeping in mind that I have a dog in addition to many plants around the perimeter of my deck. Thanks for any suggestions.

We often idolize our parents, but perhaps our grandparents even more so. One of my best memories from childhood is the time I spent with my grandfather on his porch swing. My grandpa and I spent
many evenings watching the traffic go by. We would each choose a direction of travel, and make a contest out of counting the cars as they sped by. He always knew the… Continue

"How do you eat a elephant? One bite at a time!"
I read that quote recently, and it describes exactly how I feel about this new home process. I've begun making appointments with builders and designers, and it's an intimidating prospect. So many questions!
Now my concern is finding a builder willing to construct the half-log/insulated log home I am planning, who is also willing to go as green as I can afford. So far, I have found a traditional home builder who is Energy Star certified,… Continue
