LEED Rated PrecisionCraft Log Home to Be Awarded Platinum Certification

For Mark and Crystal Ryan, building their dream mountain house was synonymous with building what is commonly referred to as a “green” home. This Oregon couple turned to award-winning Mountain Architects and PrecisionCraft Log Homes & Timber Frame to help them design and manufacture a home that is now in the final certification process to be awarded the LEED Platinum rating. LEED, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design,… Continue

One Big Hole and Lots of Dirt!

Well, another week has passed and it seems we have finally made some real progress. The driveway is cut in and we got the majority of it stoned up to the point of where we need to move some dirt around the foundation and parking area to catch grade to keep water away from the house.

In addition, the foundation has been dug. All the dirt has either been put around the sand mound to cover it and blend it into the surrounding area so it’s not as noticeable. The sand mound took a lot of… Continue

History in the Making

One of the best things about my job is that I really do feel like I learn something new every day. Whether it's new information from a source I'm interviewing, checking out a creative use of materials in a home feature spread or talking to log-home owners like you, I never cease to gain knowledge on the topic of log homes. What's even better, though, is when I get to see them in action.

After compiling information for a piece on reclaimed materials (Log Home Living, January 2010), I… Continue

Real Action!

Well, we are finally getting somewhere. I posted some pictures to show some of the progress. We now have an approved septic field. We got our tank delivered and installed and got the pump in and mounted. The county inspector was out for an inspection and passed our site. Now, we need to backfill the leach field with soil to cover over the sand and stone. then another inspection once the house is built and the alarm is hooked up.

This past weekend, we staked out the house and… Continue

Pre-fab log home experience?

Has anyone built a prefab home such as BlueRidge or similar builders? We visited the factory recently and were impressed with the homes, we truly were expecting "log sided trailer" homes. We would love to hear from anyone living in one of these homes, is it equal quality to a site built package, are you happy with the home, would you have done anything different? Did the final cost end up about where you expected it? Thanks for any comments good or bad about these homes.

Finally, Almost!

Finally! Today marked the start of some action on the property. Our septic is going in; finally. While a pile of sand isn’t all that exciting, when you’ve been waiting for this day for months, it’s pretty exciting! Hopefully by the end of the week, the septic is well underway and we can get our inspections done to cover it over and continue with earthwork.

Once again though, a month worth of time has passed since we last thought something would happen, but at least we are now… Continue
