June 1, 2014 by

Logs that have paint on them instead of stain often cause log home owners big headaches. Paint is not the best choice as a finish because it does not allow the logs to breathe. A quality log home stain is your best choice to ensure healthy logs and…

Two steps forward, one step back

Mr. Seals is working on a punch list of things to complete before we move in. We don't expect him to actually have it all done, but the cabin should be livable.

That is, if we can keep the water out.

Two bottles closer

I came back from the cabin to find Antonia and Darien taking a break from packing up the house. It seems part of their strategy is to finish off any bottle that had already been opened so we wouldn't have to move it to our new house. They were working on the dregs of a bottle of golden, smokey Mezcal when I…

Small places

Every day, it seems, there is more to see in the cabin. Mike has been helping with painting and other things, while Mr. Seals works on framing the windows and doors and on finishing, bringing definition to each small space. He has a base coat of clay on the walls. They are white now, so we have to squint to see their future color. Pale blue paint is going on in the den and russet brown added to the trim on the fireplace…

From floor to ceiling

Ryan: "How soon do you want to move in?"

Darien: "Soon. Sometime between the fifteenth and the end of the month."

Ryan: "Of March?"

Darien: "No, of February."

She's a Rainbow

There are colors everywhere, just like a rainbow. Or there will be soon.

The back of the cabin does not have as many logs as the front, so we needed to decide what to do with the wallboard. We looked at hundreds of different chips from different manufacturers and various color books, until…

Cabinet meeting

"No matter what time it is, wake me, even if it's in the middle of a Cabinet meeting." This may be the only thing Ronald Reagan said that Mr. Seals and I will ever agree on.

We have finally reached the point where the clay is being spread on the walls. The product from American Clay is a lovely shade of earthy green, with deep textured swirls. Fred has been tutoring Mr. Seals on how to apply it. Mr. Seals says his wife Robin wants him to re-paint…

Art in windows, music in bamboo

Music and art are keeping my thoughts elevated this weekend. Maybe I was inspired when I looked up to see the hawk perched high in a tree at the cabin Thursday morning. No matter. The theme developed on Friday when Darien and I attended the opening of a major Picasso…

Love me, love my cabin

The indomitable Mr. Seals felt the love and fashioned a cupid's heart for our front door out of wood and wire. I know at least one neighbor who is already coveting it. I say, get your own damn valentine.

Bold as love

"You're not from around here, are you?" asked Sarah. "You're not Old Richmond?" She caught me as I was leaving the cabin. She owns the property behind us, "the house with the swimming pool" she told me.

Balmy forecast

Now Spring restores the balmy heat, now Zephyr's sweet breezes calm the rage of the equinoctial sky.

Poem 46, Catullus (Roman poet)
I just wanted to let you know it is a balmy 64 degrees in the cabin with the thermostat set at 62.

Phone message, Mr. Seals…

Grit and gumption

We met Mr. Seals at the cabin on New Years Day. It was the weekend and he wanted to touch base with us before he and his wife Robin went to the movie. Darien wondered what they would be seeing. I told…

Lipstick on a pig

While some heavy lifting is being done elsewhere in the cabin, we are not ignoring the cosmetic. Although it is one of the most easily changed elements, paint colors have given us no end of anxiety. The easiest decision was the window frames. We early on had to chose a color for the aluminum clad windows and there was only a limited number to choose from. We went with a dark forest green. When it came time to match the wooden framed Lincoln windows, we just followed the pattern and chose a… Continue
