Well we've put a deadline on completion of our cabin. We want to move furniture in on Labor Day. And since the deadline was developed, every day feels like a "labor day". I'm sure all of you who have gone before me can attest to the rigors of wrapping up construction. We will visit our cabin every weekend (and have for the last two weeks) to finish the chinking, clean, finish the painting, clean, install various fixtures and hardware, clean, finalize arrangements with pest control, security, phone company, satellite tv provider, clean, arrange for final land and road grading, clean, and tie up loose ends with the contractor. And, oh, did I mention clean? We've met with banks, county inspectors, roofers, stainers, carpenters and the propane contractor - all in one week. We also had to establish an address with the county. I guess I've got to do some sort of preliminary landscaping, also to control the mud that a construction site generates. Thank goodness my insurance broker is an angel (and my sister-in-law). I'm also thankful that 99% of the furniture, linens, kitchen wares, etc. have been purchased, because time feels very limited. I also need to be thankful for good neighbors, friends that are willing to help, and a good group of contractors. I'm dreaming of this fall when we can get to our cabin and be lazy...read a book, do a puzzle, enjoy some good cooking and company!! Please tell me it will come. Wish me luck this weekend! Anne

Hey Anne! I totally hear you on the deadlines. We're wrapping up Log Home Living's annual buyer's guide this week (our biggest issue of the year), and crossing all the "T"s and dotting all the "I"s can feel painstaking, to say the least. (Though I have to admit, much less labor intensive than your own project!)

I wish you the best of luck in finalizing your new home. It will be a whirlwind (tornado?) of work, so just keep your eyes on the prize: the calm after the storm when you can just drive up to your cabin and RELAX.

Definitely keep us posted on your progress and POST PICTURES when you're done!

You and your husband seem to be doing everything right, and having the great support of friends, neighbors and reliable contractors is a blessing. Although your deadline sounds ambitious, the only way to bring it in on time and on budget is to do exactly what you seem to be doing. Detailed planning is the key and you seem to have that nailed down! Kudos and post some pics of this cabin!

Rachel and Tom, Thanks for your kind words of encouragement. I'm not sure we'll make our deadline, but we're trying! Rachel - I love the annual buyer's guide and can't wait to see this year's edition. I can tell so much preparation goes into each edition - that one in particular.
Tom- we have tried to establish a detailed game plan but, you know the old saying..."The best laid plans of mice and men, often go awry." I will keep you all posted. I love having the feeling of this community behind me! Anne
