4 HVAC Maintenance Tips to Consider as Seasons Change

Maintaining your home’s HVAC system doesn’t need to be an expensive or time-consuming project. As long as you carefully inspect and service the system once every few months, you should be able to avoid severe damage and unexpected breakdowns. Here are four seasonal maintenance tips that will keep your furnace and AC running smoothly no matter what the weather is like outside.

Change the Filters

Forgetting to replace your air filters will put an incredible amount of strain on your HVAC system and drive your monthly energy bills up. Most experts agree that residential air filters should be replaced every three months, but that is only a general guideline. You need to check all of your filters once a month to make sure that they are undamaged and relatively clean. Investing in high-quality filters will also improve your indoor air quality and reduce your risk of respiratory issues such as seasonal allergies.

Clean the Exterior Condenser

The condenser on the outside of your home pulls in quite a bit of air, and that is why you need to keep the area around it as clean as a possible. All grass, plants, and branches should be trimmed back so that they are at least three feet away from the condenser. You must also tell your family to not place any items on top of the condenser or its hoses. Condenser fans are extremely powerful, and they can move relatively heavy objects once turned on.

Open and Inspect Your Vents

One mistake that many homeowners make is closing off the vents in their unused rooms. Unfortunately, that can create quite a bit of pressure in the ducts and overwork your condenser. In addition to opening the slats, you will also need to make sure that your furniture isn’t covering any floor vents. Anything that creates additional pressure in the ducts will reduce the efficiency of the system and shorten its lifespan.

Schedule a Service Call

Even if you carefully inspect your HVAC system every few months, you should still schedule a service call with an experienced company like All American Air & Electric, Inc. at least twice a year. These specialists can carry out vital tasks such as testing the accuracy of your thermostat and replacing worn belts in the condenser. Depending on where you purchased your furnace and AC, you might even void their warranties if you don’t have them serviced by a professional.

Your HVAC system is very complicated, and it requires constant maintenance if you want it to run smoothly. Those who ignore their HVAC systems could find themselves dealing with a catastrophic breakdown at the worst possible time.
