I think it is terrible that insurance companies charge double or more to cover log homes.

We are in the same boat.  Our insurance company recently dropped us and now the new rates we are getting quoted are double and sometimes higher than that.  And I don't think the state we live in has as much to do with it as we think.  Our neighbor who has a frame house, whose value is just as high as ours pays half of what we are being quoted.  I truly think this is discrimination by the insurance companies.  Either they are not well informed on how well built these homes are or they don't think we will put up much of a stink collectively.  I truly think the log home industry itself needs to do some lobbying on behalf of log home owners or they may find that their customer base will drop off.  We certainly are telling anyone who asks us now that they better be careful when considering a log home because of the insurance.  The insurance company's reason for the high premiums is a bogus one.  The house is valued at what it is and our rates should be the same as the house next door that is valued at the same.

The only one I know of is the state owned insurance company "Citizens" I believe.  Two or three of our homeowners went to them as most insurance companies have either left FL or raised rates to an amount most can not afford.  It's not only log homes, frame homes and block homes in FL that were insured for years with the same insurance company were dropped and left to fend for themselves.  Previously, the log home owners I know in FL were insured with Allstate (some for 10 years or more) then just dropped.....
