I have read a little on this site about the different stain prouducts and realize that sikkens is coating that does not breathe. My problem is the garage is 3 years new with pine siding and coated with sikkens,I have replaced garden doors and sanded the rest of the windows and also stained with sikkens. We love the colour and the sheen it realy looks rich.Sikkens is on the logs now and is about 20 years old.We have been in this home for 2 years and I have recoated the house once. But we would like to blast and restain.I would like to get the same rich shine back and also match the garage and windows and maybe use the new low voc log and siding product from sikkens instead of the ceatol 1 and 23 . What should I do.I need help

Randy,

Blasting should be the last option that you choose when looking to refinish your log home. Most contractors will tell you that it is the only way to do it. We have used media blasting in twice in over 20 years of experience in this industry and we were really dissatisfied with the results. What media blasting does is leave a very rough finish and raise the grain drastically. It can also lead to your logs rotting faster on dark walls if all of the organic material is not properly removed. We hand-sand every building we restore or refinish and I can say that we have not had any complaints on the outcome in the 20 years we have been using this method of finish removal. Sikkens also does not make any low VOC products. If you like the sheen of Sikkens you should look at Sashco Capture stains as well as Perma-Chink Lifeline Ultra stains. Both of these products are environmentally friendly (Sikkens is not), water based clean-up, and are much easier to apply and maintain in the future. Hi Randy! Take a look around the Stains and Sealants forums; maybe someone has already answered a similar question. If not, try starting a new post in the forums, you will probably get more replies in the forums than on a blog.

Thanks!

Emily
