Three Important Rules for Scaffolding Safety

All construction projects, no matter how big or small require some degree of scaffolding usage. Even after being such a widely-used component in the construction industry, the use of scaffolding poses a serious threat of injury and accidents. Proper usage of the structure is effective in eliminating these risks and ensuring a safe scaffolding experience.

Scaffolding equipment suppliers generally provide instruction manuals and safety guidelines with their structures for ensuring proper usage and safety of the workers. With that said, here are the three primary rules that you must follow to ensure a safe scaffolding experience:

1. Never Skip Inspection:

Scaffolding is a temporary structure that is used as an aid for construction work and to support the workers. The temporary nature of the structure enhances the potential for risks and damages. If not inspected properly, small damages and incidents could lead to major accidents. When commencing the project, conduct a thorough inspection of the worksite so that you can identify any hazards. You must ensure that there are no power lines nearby so that there is no risk of electrocution. To prevent accidents, conduct inspection daily and run through the checklist every morning.

2. The Workers Must Have Basic Scaffolding Knowledge:

It is crucial that the workers must be well-versed with the basics of using a scaffolding structure. The structure should be sturdy and strong, so that it won't collapse in the middle of use. To ensure the this, there are some regulations that all the workers must know and follow. The guidelines to assemble and erect the scaffold while complying to the load limits must be known to everyone.

For a structure higher than 3m, guardrails and other essential accessories must be used. The workers should be provided with the necessary protective gear like non-slip footwear, head protection and fall-prevention gear. The platform should also be kept free of materials and tools to prevent falls due to tripping over objects.

Training the workers of these essential guidelines is integral to ensuring scaffolding safety.

3. Always Prioritise Safety Over Speed and Savings:

In the construction industry, there is nothing as valuable as time. However, when using scaffolding structures, you should never rush a project. Instead of the time and the budget, you must always focus first on the safety of the workers. As valuable as time maybe, there is nothing more valuable than the lives and safety of the workers. Also, not following the necessary guidelines and regulations can result in hefty fines and even jail time. So, it is best to respect the regulations and employ safe and efficient methods.

If you follow these three principal rules of scaffolding usage, your workers will be able to complete the job safely and in a timely manner. If you do not have much knowledge about scaffoldings, you can get some help from scaffolding equipment suppliers as many of them provide training too. Following their instructions is the foundation for ensuring success in construction projects.
