When interior logs are cut short

After so many years of planning to build our log home, we found a nearly perfect one for us in the same vicinity as our property. The house needs a bit of work. There are 4 gorgeous logs inside on the main level. Apparently they were cut about 8-10 inches too short and don't quite reach floor to ceiling. The builder filled in the gaps with these ugly wood boxes. Instead of us replacing these logs for several thousands of dollars, I'd love to know if anyone has any ideas as to what could be used to fill in this space between a log and the floor or ceiling. Copper bands or stones are ideas, but we're not sure how they'll work.

Miller on September 20, 2012 at 3:56pm: A picture would help to describe your issue: square or round posts, square or round horizontal(?) logs (joists?), milled or hand peeled, log sizes (all), floor material (if a complimentary method of 'fill' at floor level is to be considered, etc?. Lori, there is an answer..................., a picture will get you to the 'best' answer the quickest. Best wishes for a positive solution.

Comment by Trixie on September 6, 2012 at 10:46am: If it is 8 to 10" short, I don't think it was for done on purpose for settling. Are the posts decorative Lori or are they holding something up? If they are decorative, I like the idea of raising them up and then doing your "fill in" on the bottom vs the top. Will look more natural and not as obvious. If they are structural, this will be difficult to do. I think the copper bands would be your best choice.

Comment by Raymond Wengerd on September 4, 2012 at 4:14pm: If it was done properly those adjustable logs would have been cut through the floor, and the jacks would have been installed on top of a beam in the basement (out of site).

Boxes? The installers had good intentions, but not much vision.

Lori as far as your question to an alternative, the only thing that would not look shoddy, would be to build pillars on the floor and set your posts on that,(the weight would still have to be transfered to support beams) probably not cheaper than putting in new posts though.

Comment by Chris Wood on September 4, 2012 at 4:07pm: I would think some log trim in the same shape/finish of the other logs below can be ripped, cut and toe-nailed to fill the gap on both sides of wall, after all settling has taken place? If you have a picture of your log profile to share, there may be a nearby supplier of "log veneer" with some material in stock? The large, hand-crafted logs would be a little tougher to rip, but still possible for the right talent.

We just moved into our new cabin last December, and we had the same dilemma...what to do to cover those ugly jacks and space? Our builder made some boxes too, but I don't like them very well. I'd love to hear some ideas as well...
