Fun Christmas Projects

Besides spending time decorating the heck out of our log home, I've been trying to do more crafty things since the holidays are fast approaching. I enjoy bird watching and seeing all the different birds that come to visit us. I decided my birds needed their own "edible" christmas tree and decorated a pine tree on our property w/ strung cranberry and popcorn as well as the famous pine cone feeders (smeared w/ peanut butter and rolled in seeds.) For the pine cones feeders - gather some large pine… Continue

First Snowfall at the Log Home!

This is what I woke up to on Sunday morning. I think the first dusting of snow is the most beautiful! I am breaking out the Christmas music (okay, I have a confession to make - I made a mix of the Transiberian Orchestra Christmas music and I have been playing it s… Continue

New neighbor intro!

My name is Jeffrey Iverson. Please excuse my writing because this is all new to me using a computer to talk to others. I am a computer dunce. I joined because I have had the dream of building log homes and living in a handcrafted log home some day. I was working for a custom home builder here in Reno at a gated private country club called montreux. I took a chance asking a lot of the homeowners my dream of building log homes and to my supprise one of them offered to loan me the money to get star… Continue

Holiday Recipe Exchange - Log Home style

Ok, so it's not exactly log home related, but who doesn't like to eat—especially around the holidays, right? A few months ago, we created a Community recipe exchange in our Just For Fun forum. A few people posted, but we kind of let it die off. Now that the holiday season is upon us, member Glenn V has rekindled my enthusiasm by sharing his mother's recipe for Delicious Raw Apple Cake. Sounds perfect for Thanksgiving, and I can't wait to try it. Check it out and post your own culinary concoction… Continue

Packing up for the year update

Well as I mentioned before we decided on the Presby Enviro septic. I figured I would save some money on installation and do it my self. So after some studying and a couple tests I am now oficially certified to installthem. I might consider the instllation in the spring, if not I will do it the following year. So as the Title goes I have packed up for the year, bringing the backhoe home again and cleaning up the site in general. Got my tree stand all set and ready so I I can spend my weekends rel… Continue

Chantilly Log Home Show Recap

Sunday morning was a good time to go to the Log Home show... when I went it was practically dead, which meant I didn't have to fight the crowds to look at the stuff I wanted to look at. I meandered from display to display, taking my time, and not being jostled or having people step in front of me. It also meant that I got to spend time talking with the fine folks that run this neighborhood, without competing with others for their attention! I spent a lot of time talking with Donna and Sara, as… Continue

It's official!

A while back Greg and I had decided to name our log home 'The Loons' Nest.' This was due to the loons on our lake and because I just love this bird! I wanted to put up a sign outside our log home to make it official and have been looking at many sign companies. I decided… Continue

The Downside to Log Home Living... Woodpeckers!

In my previous post I complained about the bears being back in town and their fascination with my garbage. No sooner had we got the hot wire installed to foil their efforts - before we were again attacked by local wildlife. This time it was like an Alfred Hitchcock tale… Yesterday afternoon my wife and I were sitting in my office talking about nothing in particular when we both heard this loud knocking…. I mean LOUD. I looked out the window to the left and no one was at the door, but whe… Continue

Bears... they're b-a-a-a-a-ck!

Every morning around daybreak, Lilly (our Great Pyrenees) and I take our walk. This exercise is as much for me as it is for her, because the trip home is all up hill for about 1/3 of a mile… a real heart-pumper. At the en… Continue

What Was I Thinking?

Oh, those long-ago heady days just before the official start of summer... June 18, to be specific. That's when I posted a headline here that said: "Who's Afraid of the Big, Bad Economy?" I defaulted to my optimistic mode and read the economic tea leaves, which, at the time, looked pretty damn good. Unemployment was low. Gross domestic product was robust. And, hey, who ISN'T optimistic when summer is about to… Continue
