The Log Home Neighborhood

An online (log home) community for log home enthusiasts.

I'd love to see pics of other's members "great deals" of purchases they've made for their log home. Please share the name / web address of the place too - I'm always on the hunt for the "perfect" item for our log home!
This petite antler chandelier was perfect for our humble sized dining area. I got it on sale at Black Forest Decor www.blackforestdecor.com . When they have a sale it's a good one! I picked this up for $294.

Wow, what a great idea Shelley! I already checked out Black Forest because I love your chandelier. My best deal was the purchase of one of those wagon wheel benches. In Chesapeake, VA there is a warehouse store that sells surplus items at a huge discount. I picked up a wagon wheel bench like the ones you see in catalogues today for less than $200. I also bought a wagon wheel table and chairs for our porch. I know this is not helpful to folks who don't live near Chesapeake; they don't have a website that I know of. I also like items at www.crowsnesttrading.com, however I pretty much just shop from their clearance selection - and even that can be pretty steep. www.napastyle.com is another site with a clearance section. It seems cabin/lodge decor is pretty pricey in general and I would love to hear about bargains. Thanks, Shelley!

I love that bench Anne. For those of us who are close enough to Chesapeake to shop there, could you tell me what the name of the warehouse store is? Thanks!!!!!!!

Hi Susan,
It's Home Emporium on Military Hwy. near the Battlefield Blvd. intersection. It's an interesting place to visit every so often to see what they have. They recently have had lots of the wagon wheel furniture, as well as the root-looking furniture seen in catalogs today. There's a lot to sort through. Happy shopping!~ Anne

Hi, I'm CJ (female) from Va. Born & raised in Chesapeake. I have seen those wagon wheel benches and think they are terrific. I just joined this website alittle over an hour ago and Shelley has already helped with some tongue & groove ideas. My husband and I will start construction in Late spring of 2009 of our cabin and I am happy to say, we have purchased ALOT of decorations so far. Just today, we purchased and antinue highback oak bed, which matches two other pieces we purchased over a year ago at an auction house. Thanks. CJ

I hear you, Shelley! I am a bargain hunter extraordinaire. I also scour web sites, catalogs and stores in search of rustic wares that appear in the pages of Log Home Design. I was surprised to find that major retailers (like Target, Kohls, and JCPenney) carry rustic-themed home goods. You can find them by searching for key words—like pinecone, rustic, moose, you name it—on their web sites.

Also, if you're at all craft-inclined, I've been doing an online feature on Do-It-Yourself Decor. My favorite? The rustic twig frame.

I made this project first and it's still my favorite. Plus, it's so easy and cheap! All you need is an old frame, some twigs, and a glue gun.

Hi there,
Was it my first post on this discussion (scroll up to June 14 reply by Anne)? I included a picture attachment of a wagon wheel bench. Groovy stuff seems to have a lot of the wagon wheel, root and reclaimed teak looking pieces. I was disappointed that they didn't sell to the public, too. Crow's Nest Trading has several similar pieces. Napa Style also has a few as well as Viva Terra -Eco Living. All three of these have web sites. Good Luck! Anne

The perfect S&P set for your table - I bought a set and we don't even have our house yet! :-) Dee

Dee - I think the fun part is accumulating items along the way in planning for your log home! We picked up things "here and there" for 4 years before we built ours. This is cute by the way! I have some pine cone ones I picked up at Jays Sporting Goods of all places!

Shelley and CJ - my hubby thinks I'm nuts buying decor before we even have a house. I am so glad to hear I am not alone. I need to buy another Gladiator storage unit for my garage to start storing things. ha ha ha

I have decided (for now at least) - that my theme will most likely more of a lake/woodsy theme and not necessarily western, camping, etc. Although I do love the carved doors and posts with little critters on them. I'm sure I will change my mind a few times along the way - but having this much time does allow me to really 'try out" a lot of styles before making a commitment.

We think we want a Tuliviki soapstone heater - which is not very pretty - so we were thinking about putting up a nice stone wall behind it and maybe trying to add a wood log mantel to foo-foo it up. But we love the notion that one can heat the whole house with wood efficiently - and since this will be a vacation home to start with - we don't need continuous heat - for now - will need to investigate back-up heating to keep the pipes from freezing though. And we love the little bake ovens these stove options have - I could actually get back to baking bread if the taste was worth my effort (but on vacation that effort would be worth my time).

My hubby - the cook - wants Elmira appliances in my favorite color - red. Still thinking about this as I was thinking about having color in my kitchen cabinets - but really 'can't' with a colorful eye popping stove, frig, etc - as the kitchen would then be way too busy.

What are you all deciding about kitchens? I love the natural look - like Shelley has (see her pics on her blog page) with the eye popping appliances in the dark color (black?) - so that is where I am today.

We are planning a sun room off the dining area - that could become a dining room when bigger space is needed - I could do a china-hutch type piece in there and have it painted in a color - then i could get colored cabinets and natural in the same house. {sigh} too much to decide!
