Has anyone stained their log home on their own?

My dream is new log home, I live in clasical house on Slovak village Nesluša. Now I am starting development my dream, I have only one big problem - money :-)) ,I hope that this problem defeat. In our country are only few log homes.I have many informations from internet

my husband and I stained the entire outside of our new log home... what a sence of accomplishment... the hardest part was the prep... stripping the mill glaze off and the bit of weathering from being up for 6 months prior to staining. We went with Timber Pro products and they are very helpful on the directions and tips.... we used the garden sprayer method and back brushed.. biggest tip... WATCH FOR DRIPS! don't spray too much. we did 3 coats and its been a year and it looks great! The inside was much easier, we did not stain only a clear UV coat and the urethane finish.

How did you clean the interior to remove the sun bleaching and weathering?

Hi Wes - sorry I'm so late in replying. We had some of the stained areas lightly sanded and used a light solution of bleach/water to get rid of the bluish stains. It didn't really spend too much time being weather from the sun before we stained our interior - we just used a clear coat color called symphony.

I'm about to as we speak. I started staining aas it went up, ceiling and rafters are done. I have to clean the walls now to start the exterior. Actually, it went well so far. Heck, call me if you want.

We stained our log home ourselves using Sansin products. I wish every job we've done during this build was as easy as staining and finishing!

I just read where your windows are already installed. What we have done in the past is remove the screens, cover them with a plastic trash bag, reinstall them and them spray or brush it on. You can then remove the screens and covering and stain your window trim and sashes. If your product is an oil based one, it will be better to brush it on to reduce the oily over spray. I hope this helps.

The most important thing to know about sanding is that the wood tells the tale. If you spot sand and leave the wood surrounding the area spot sanded untouched, you will have a lighter, brighter spot when sealed. Make sure you always sand lightly around the area, feathering outward. This may very well mean going the length of the log. You can take a spray bottle (like a windex spray bottle) of water and mist the logs to see if the sanded areas blend or if a marked difference in wood color exists. Hope this tip helps.

Hi Kevin,
We ended up having the builder do it (due to my husband traveling too much) but we did the caulking on the tongue & groove ends ourselves. We put 2 stain coats on and next year we'll put the 3rd coat on and the sealing coat (we broke it up to save $ this year as we had other things to purchase for our newly built home). Sashco said said we'd be fine w/ 2 coats but everyone else told us to go 3. What do you think?
