Profile Information

Tell us about yourself:
Trying to sell current house to get enough money to build a log home in North Carolina. I am a carpenter so I plan to do a lot of the work myself.
After reading some of the comments by other members I thought I would add some thoughts, so here goes;
(1) It appears that many of you have the same problem that I have, selling your current home. Perhaps we should exchange ideas as to how to best do this in the current economy.
(2) I know we all have different tastes but please share your favorite log home with the rest of us. Most of us are not planning to build the biggest or most expensive log home, so let's share ideas.
(3) Even before we build the log home of our dreams we have ideas or need help with decorating... like lighting or plumbing fixtures or cabinets ... well you get the idea ... so let's communicate. That's it for now.
Are you lucky enough to be living in a log home?

A bit peaked

I'm sorry but I'm a bit upset and I have to share it. It bothers me when so many people join a group such as ours and then simply wait for someone else to make comments, either in a blog or with one another. BUT when the founders of the concept and the website don't respond to simple questions, well that is unforgivable. I won't go into specifics but I think you know who you are. There, I feel better already. Ted

Share It

I think when I joined our group I was number 134 or close to it. Being that there were so few of us it was not surprising that very few were lucky enough to own a log home. At last count, I think the number of members is over 530 plus. With that come more folks who own log homes. But I find that most of the people who do own log homes simply state that they are owners and leave it at that. So my request of those of you who do own the home of our dreams is simple, PLEASE SHARE IT. Take some pictu… Continue

Wishful Thinking

I find it amazing that there are so many people now who are "Log Home Neighbors". At last count there were 495 and growing. I also find it amazing that there are so many people from Florida who are members. Like me they have the vision of a different kind of life. Personally, I've been in Florida now about twenty years, coming from Westchester County in NY. I don't know about the rest of the members from Florida but for my part I'm tired of a year that seems to be made up of endless hot and humi… Continue

Ted

So you think you're Paul Bunyan

I read at a lot of real estate ads for property, land, acreage ... what ever you want to call it. But what I really love is the descriptive language. "Don't miss this lovely parcel with it's picturesque rolling ...". Rolling, rolling, how about a 60 degree slope. I've looked at some of these great buys and I have to tell you, you better not have a fear of high places. But I think one of my favorite selling lines is, "Great view with a little tree trimming". Watch out for this one, you can chop d… Continue

How many log home manufacturers?

I was just thinking about the number of log home manufacturers that LogHome.com mentioned in their web site. It think it was somewhere in the range of 650. So what does that mean to those of us who are trying to choose that one perfect manufacturer who will build that perfect log home for us? Well, I don't know about you but I think that I investigated about half of the 650 in my own search. I found that most seemed reliable, most offered the three usual options ( buy only the logs, buy a dri-i… Continue

Hi Ted,

It is good to hear from you. I would never forget you & Marilyn. I loved working and getting to know the both of you. I certainly understand you being on hold with your building plans. I would suggest holding onto your land for the time being. You got a good deal on the land. The market is really slow here, but it is definitely a buyers market. Not one like Florida/California, but a good area to get some reasonable deals. From your comment about selling your house--I take it the Fla. market is still in the tank?

Thank you for recommending me, but no, I have not heard from CJ. Is she a member of this Log Community? If so, send me her email address and I'll touch base with her. I really appreciate my clients recommending me to others. And this community is a great way to network.

I hope you and Marilyn have a wonderful Thanksgiving and I look forward to talking with you soon.

Thanks,
Robin

Ok Ted,
How do I find Robin? Perhaps the name of the Real Estate company.

Ted,
That is a reality check. I think I'll wait till I have the money in hand but to think I'm still going to be here several years is the pits...
Anyway...perhaps it isn't wise to spend the money on a Tampa trip: my for my dog just cost me $535 and my car $180 and then there was this and that too..Between this election and our "crisis" things seem gloomy right now.
But I do enjoy popping in here and chatting
Thanks

Hi Ted,
I gather since I'm no where near building it would be a tease to me also. Things are very grim in Florida and my home sign is fading.
I will consider and definetly let you know....thanks

Hi Ted,
Retired on a disability. My oldest son and daughter-in-law are in the Charlotte area and I enjoy being near them but I would consider the foothills of North Carolina.
After being in flat long Florida for so long I find that those high, winding roads and I don't agree. I spent many weekends in Vermont in our family home…wonderful, clean fresh air, snowmobiling memories and I paid no attention to the mountain.
Anyway thanks for the list for me to search. Actually this isn’t the first time looking at Log homes …I should have followed my dreams then.
I'm still a little handy and so is my son perhaps I could cut corners and do work myself.
Market is wicked here.
I’ll keep looking and perhaps pop in here to say hi again.
Thanks
CJ

Hi Ted,
I'm new here and so glad I found this site but I feel the size of my home with land is considerably smaller than most of you.
I too am in Florida being a resident since 1977 and around 1994 or so I moved to North Carolina and spent 5 years there. Two of my kids ended up back in Florida and "made" me move back...and too my horror 2 moved to North Carolina a year ago and I missed selling my house for a good profit by 4 months and now I'm stuck here.
After much thought about leaving my sons again in Florida I decided to sell for whatever it will take to buy land and build a log home...this could be a fiasco but since it’s just me and my dog a small home could be inviting. I just don’t want to wait till this market comes up…….I’ll be toooooo old. Best of both worlds would be great but that is not an option.
Do you know of a site that would list floor plans and prices and perhaps a log home plus land…..that would help.
Thanks,
CJ

Hi Ted,
The answers to your questions are yes and yes. George did develop more speed with chinking and the end results are beautiful. However, he does not ever want to do it again and says he will deny having any chinking experience if asked :). It is pretty easy work, but very, very monotonous. However, the money saved was significant. I'm sure with your contracting backround, you'd be fine. ~ Anne

Ted - your new photos are enchanting!! Now, THAT'S what log home living is about. It sounds like you even know some of the history of the home - how fortunate. Best luck and thanks for sharing! Anne
